A Fresh Start for the New Year

As Park Derochie and many other companies welcome their employees back from the holiday break this week it is important to realize how difficult it can be to “get back into the work groove.”

As we all shift back to our regular work routine here are a few steps to begin the 2017 year with safety on our mind?

Perform a 2017 Hazard Assessment – returning to work this year may pose new hazards which were not apparent in 2016.

Weather – prepare yourself and our equipment for snow, ice and sub-freezing temperatures.
Change in Location – beginning to work at a new site, or returning to a site after an extended period of time, will present unknown work conditions. Supervision should walk the work areas with the workers to identify, remove or control any hazards.
Equipment – equipment which has not been used for a period of time should be thoroughly inspected and function tested before use.

Review and Update the Job Safety Analysis – the beginning of the New Year is a good time to review the JSAs with our work crews. Weekly safety meetings are a good opportunity to review, discuss and track any suggested changes.
Project Documentation – is the Emergency Response Plan accurate, do we need to print new Material Safety Data Sheets / Safety Data Sheets, do we have a sufficient amount of FLHA cards, are the documents in our Black Box current?
Employee Training – an Employee Training Matrix from the HSE Department will provide a list of employee training certificates with expiry dates. Additionally, employees should inform their supervisor when their safety certificates are approaching expiry. The winter season is a good time to make arrangements for employee training.
