School Zone Safety

We would like to give a friendly reminder to all drivers and their families to be extra cautious on the roads following this long weekend – why? School zones across the province are back in effect

More than 700,000 Alberta students will be returning to the classroom
Approximately 300,000 students will use the school bus system on a regular basis
Approximately 6,000 school buses will transport students to and from school daily
School buses in Alberta travel an estimated 450,000 (cumulative) kilometers per day

“Drivers need to remember to put the brakes on in school zones and around buses. Heading back to school is an
exciting time for kids. Parents and educators should talk to them about road safety so they understand their role in
safely getting to school and home at the end of the day.”

Vehicle operators can help prevent collisions by being extra cautious when driving in school zones and around buses. Children may be disembarking the bus and crossing the road in school zones – in these areas, lowered speed limits are mandatory during the identified hours.

When approaching a school sign (with or without a speed sign attached) you are entering a school area
The speed limit for both urban and rural school zones is 30 km/h unless otherwise posted
You are not permitted to pass or attempt to pass another vehicle (travelling in the same direction) within a school
zone (when the zone is in effect)
Alternating flashing amber lights on a school bus indicates the bus is slowing down to stop, and all drivers must be
preparing to do the same
The financial penalty for failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights is $543 and six demerit points
