While each of our five senses are extremely important, the sense of sight is arguably the most frequently used sense we have. From the moment we wake up we use our sense of sight in everything we do.
Imagine if one day we lost our sight, or if our vision was permanently impaired. How would that affect our everyday lives?
According to the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind), over 700 Canadian workers per day sustain eye injuries on the job. Some of these injuries result in lost time and/or, temporary or permanent, vision loss.
Do we feel that is a bad statistic? Yes, it is a terrible statistic, but the following statistic is worse:
90 percent of eye injuries are preventable by the use of proper safety equipment, including eyewear!
What are some reasons why workers would not use the proper eyewear?
Eyewear is designed to protect the worker from foreign bodies or objects to the eye. The appropriate eyewear is a mandatory component of our daily Personal Protective Equipment.
The most important fact to remember is that wearing the proper eyewear is not just a rule, but it is the right thing to do. Eyewear is intended to protect the worker’s sight, wellbeing and quality of life. When your work scope requires the use of a specific type of eyewear, do not perform the task without it. Consider the negative outcome if your vision is impaired and how it would affect your life.
